IS YOUR LIFE OUT OF BALANCE

Noticing your life being out of balance in some ways is like the process of aging. Day to day glances in the mirror don’t reveal the continual yet subtle transformation that comes with aging. Then suddenly one day perhaps you see a photo or catch a reflection in the mirror and you are shocked at what you see. I feel like this can be how it happens when our life is out of balance. It can take a while for us to notice. So how can we find a way to recognize this before we hit a crisis point. One way is to pay attention to gradual change. Isn’t that why we use good skin care and have facials. We know it happens but we pay attention to the gradual change and keep it looking as good as it can for as long as we can. When we are talking about life tipping out of balance we need to be able to see the bigger picture, take a step back and remind yourself of what’s important to you. Changing your perspective on any situation will change the situation. Stop being so busy. Learn to disconnect, refocus and rest. The Greek philosopher Heraclitus said “change is the only constant”. Accept change. Being committed to raising your own self- awareness of how you are doing in your life requires courage, the courage to acknowledge the less comfortable feelings as they come up and the awareness to not turn a blind eye to them. These feelings are as important as feelings of happiness and they need your attention. Rumi calls them “different guest” and by allowing them to take a place at your table gives you the opportunity to develop compassion, tolerance of inevitable discomfort, and ultimately resilience. And, hopefully, to keep your life in balance.
